To us, here and now, it appears thus.

rants, ramblings and other things that make life worth living…

How big is almost all of human knowledge?

About 122 Gigs. Yeah, thats it! Amazing isn’t it?. We finally managed to get the wikipedia static dumps for english uncompressed and it turns out, its no more than about 122 Gigs. Imagine that!. And since I am in line for more computing power than I could have possibly imagined to get my hands on (muahaaahaa..) I am itching to get wikipedia up on the operation table and go at it.

I will post some nice updates on wikipedia here though.

  1. The whole Wikipedia fitted in a CD last I checked the archives. 122 G ! Sure enough Wikipedia is growing exponentially. I am not sure how far it will grow before too much noise kicks in, making it difficult for the small percent of morally bind wiki users to clean out the chaff, and it evaporates to dust. Nice thing you have a snapshot!

  2. 7z compression seriously rocks.. with a 1:15 compression ratio, no wonder the whole of wikipedia can fit in a single dvd (or atleast for now). Btw, I’ve downloaded wikipedia in ALL languages, just uncompressed the english version (which took a weekend on a pretty powerful computer).
