To us, here and now, it appears thus.

rants, ramblings and other things that make life worth living…

I’m enraged.

Random Night of websurfing, and I suddenly feel the urge to look up the meaning of the word “Geek”,(which I claim myself to be) and guess what?

This is what dictionary.com comes up with.

geek Audio pronunciation of ( P ) Pronunciation Key (gk)
n. Slang

    1. A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
    2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
  1. A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.

Atleast DICT.ORG has something better, though it starts off with something derogatory, it gives this.

geek geek (g[=e]k), n.
1. A performer in a carnival, often presented as a wild man,
who performs grotesquely disgusting acts, such as biting
the head off a live chicken or snake.
[PJC]

2. Hence: Any eccentric or strange person; an oddball; an
eccentric. [WordNet sense 1]
[PJC]

3. Hence: A student who is socially inept and a misfit in his
class, especially one who is an intellectual; a nerd; a
dork. [Informal]
[PJC]

4. Hence: An intellectually inclined person, especially one
who is interested in scientific or technical subjects; as,
a group of geeks wearing pocket protectors; -- originally
a deprecatory and contemptuous term, but in the 1990's,
with the increase in popularity of computers and the
frequency of accumulation of great wealth by computer
entrepreneurs, it has come to be used with noticeable
frequency by technically competent people to refer to
themselves, ironically and sometimes proudly. [Informal]
[PJC]

Now, thats the difference between something thats run by MIT and some odd ball nutcase company which can’t get their connotations right!

Signing Off,
Vishnu Vyas.

  1. This is because of the fact that the word ‘geek’ started out as a derogatory word, but by the end of its journey, due to various circumstances, it went on to take a positive meaning. So, I suppose, giving the original meaning IS more appropriate, following up with the more contemporary meaning is ok, but the original meaning must stand, for say, atleast another 5-6 years, by when that meaning would be forgotten, and then you can bring your favorite interpretations of the word to the top!
